Why I rely on simple Activity Sheets.
Okay, close your eyes and picture this: It’s the middle of the summer holidays, it’s pissing down with rain, and the house currently resembles a warzone staged by small, feral humans.
Someone is crying over a missing Lego brick, and Someone else is trying to scale the kitchen counter. And your stood there staring into the distance, wondering if you can legally sell your soul for five minutes of peace and quiet.
Naturally this is where your brain would go: “Ooh, lets suggest an educational app!”
Big Mistake… Massive… They look at you like you just offered them a warm glass of blended broccoli. Screens have their dark magic, sure, but sometimes you just need to unplug the chaos before someone looses an eye.
So what’s my actual, Zero-shame survival tactic? A piece of paper and a pencil. Maybe some crayons.
Now! before you think of those soul crushing stark white photocopied sheets from 1994 that smelled like a weird chemical ink which made you want to chew your arm off.
I’m talking about a genuinely good, simple activity sheet. Hear me out, because for a KS1 or KS2 kid, they are low-key and a parents superpower. why you might ask?
well lets dive into the why…
They are stealth workouts for the brain and hand.
Seriously. Watching an older child tackle a proper puzzle, map out a maze, or get completely lost in a drawing challenge looks innocent enough. But backstage? its pure focus training. Hand-eye coordination, problem solving, and building that physical writing stamina without them groaning about “ doing schoolwork” on their holiday.
The Activity sheets then buy you time for a cuppa either tea or coffee.
let’s be real for a second. Hand a child a cool, space-themed or tractor themed puzzle page, like something pulled straight out of my debut Dreamy goes to the Moon, you watch magic happen. The noise level drops. They zone into their own little detective bubble, crack the code and look up beaming like they have just solved world peace. And that exact window of time… it’s the holy grail, a window where you can have a cuppa and drink it while its still hot. Its priceless.
It actually beats the glass screen.
Kids are wired to make things, figure things out with their hands, and actually create… not mindlessly swipe at a piece of glass while YouTube algorithm tries to trap them there for three hours. When they physically tackle a clever puzzle or a story based challenge. Their imagination takes the wheel.
The bottom line is…
Activity sheets don’t need to be overly complicated. Sometimes a clean, clever page inspired by a storybook is all it takes to rescue a miserable afternoon, or at least buy you enough time to pee with the door closed.
